Carrie Underwood knows her father is really proud of her, even if he doesn’t say it out loud. “My dad’s the kind of person that most likely he’ll never look at me or my sisters and say, ‘Hey, I’m proud of you,’ or ‘You’re doing a great job,’ or anything like that, but I catch him watching things that he’s taped of me on TV and stuff like that,” the Oklahoma native explains. “That means a lot, and I’d meet co-workers of his that used to work with him, and they’d say, ‘Your dad has pictures of you all over his desk.’ Proud to the world [laughs] … not so much to me, but proud to the world.”
Carrie Underwood’s “Last Name” and Thompson Square’s “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not” have each earned digital platinum certifications by the RIAA for 1 million paid downloads. Underwood has earned six platinum singles while this is the first for Thompson Square. In addition, Taylor Swift’s “Mean” has been certified gold for 500,000 digital downloads. Among albums, Kid Rock’s Born Free has been certified platinum for shipments of 1 million units, while Eric Church’s Carolina and Zac Brown Band’s Pass the Jar have been certified gold for 500,000 units.
Country crooner Jeff Jenkins had an emotional bond with Carrie Underwood‘s ‘Jesus, Take the Wheel’ for his live performance on tonight’s edition of ‘The Voice.’
Jenkins, a member of Adam Levine‘s team, has talked about the recent loss of his mother on previous episodes of ‘The Voice.’ He said that Underwood’s song “means so much” to him, as he went through some dark times when his mom passed away.
“Because you’re so emotionally connected to it, that has to be conveyed [in your performance],” Levine told Jenkins. “I want it to be the emotional tearjerker it’s meant to be, so I can make my mom proud,” said Jenkins.
Jenkins started out a little timid on the first verse during the live performance, but then showcased his powerful country twang on the song’s chorus. He seemed to really take on the spirit of the song as he sung, and was a bit broken up at the end of the tune.
Immediately after the performance, host Carson Daly said to Jenkins, “Momma was proud of that one.” Levine told his team member, “You did such an incredible job that it’s almost as if I completely forgot about the fact that this is a competition.”
The 28-year-old singer arrived in Sydney in the wee small hours yesterday, after the volcanic ash cloud over Melbourne on Monday forced her entourage to travel by bus instead of plane on her first visit to Australia.
“We got to see a bit of the land I wasn’t expecting to see,” said Underwood, who is here to promote an updated version of her third album, Play On.
The singer, winner of American Idol in 2005, has sold 14 million albums since then, making her the most successful artist to emerge from the worldwide Idol franchise, eclipsing Kelly Clarkson.
“I feel like I’m on a rollercoaster, but I don’t want to get off,” she said. “I’ve experienced so much in six years.”
